DSM 5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)
I- In Adults
Gender dysphoria = a mismatch between assigned gender and experienced gender lasting at least six months, accompanied by significant psychological distress and manifested by at least two of the following characteristics:
Ø A marked incongruence between experienced or expressed gender and primary and/or secondary sexual characteristics
Ø A strong desire to be rid of one's primary or secondary sexual characteristics
Ø A strong desire to have the sexual characteristics of the other gender
Ø A strong desire to belong to another gender
Ø A desire to be treated as a person of the other gender
Ø A strong conviction of having feelings and reactions of the other gender
II- In Children
Incongruence between assigned gender and experienced gender accompanied by psychological distress or disruption of social and/or school life; a desire to be or conviction of being of the other gender and at least five of the following seven criteria:
Ø Cross-dressing
Ø Playing the role of the other gender during games
Ø Preference for games and toys of the other gender
Ø Having peers of the other gender
Ø Rejection of games and toys typical of their assigned gender
Ø Rejection of their sexual characteristics
Ø Desire to have the sexual characteristics of the other gender
III- In Adolescents (development of secondary sexual characteristics)
Incongruence between assigned gender and experienced gender accompanied by psychological distress or disruption of social and/or school life; at least two of the following six criteria:
Ø Marked incongruence between primary and/or secondary sexual characteristics and experienced gender
Ø Desire to be rid of one's sexual characteristics
Ø Desire to have the sexual characteristics of the other gender
Ø Desire to be of the other gender
Ø Desire to be treated as the other gender
Ø Conviction of having the reactions and feelings of the other gender
